How do I use Claude Code as a beginner (no coding)?

By TechGuyver · Updated

Short answer

Claude Code is Claude working inside a folder on your computer, where it can create and change real files. You do not need to code. Describe the finish line in plain English, let it build, and when something breaks, paste the error back and say fix this. It needs a paid Claude plan.

In chat, Claude writes text and you copy it somewhere. In Claude Code, Claude works inside a folder on your computer and makes the files itself: a web page, a spreadsheet, a script.

Chat or Claude Code

The job Use

A file you will keep and change: a page, a calculator, a script Claude Code
Something that touches customer records or passwords Neither, until you have read your plan’s data terms

What you need

A paid Claude plan Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. The Free plan does not include Claude Code. A Claude Console account (pay per use) also works
An empty folder Make a new one for each project
A terminal The text window on your computer. There is also a desktop app
Something small to build One page or one script is enough for a first run

Anthropic’s quickstart gives the install command for your system: code.claude.com/docs/en/quickstart. Copy the command from the official page, not from a blog, because it changes.

Naming the services, hours and a Book now button leaves Claude nothing to guess.

“Make me a website” makes Claude guess everything. Say what done looks like: what is on the page, what the button does, what it looks like.

Worked example: the dog grooming site

  1. Make an empty folder called grooming-site and open Claude Code in it.
  2. Paste this prompt:

Make a one-page website for my dog grooming business. Show my three services with prices (Bath $35, Full groom $65, Nail trim $15), my opening hours (Tue to Sat, 9 to 5), and my phone number 555-0100. Add a “Book now” button that opens a form with name, dog’s name and preferred day. Clean, white background, one accent color. Put everything in one file called index.html.

  1. Claude proposes the file and asks permission. In its default mode it asks before it writes files or runs commands, per Anthropic’s permissions documentation. Read, then approve.
  2. Open index.html in your browser.

Sample of what you should see (illustrative): a header with the business name, three price cards, an hours line, and a Book now button that opens the form. The form will not email you yet. That needs a form service or a small server, and Claude will tell you what it needs when you ask “how do I make this form actually send me the booking?”

When something breaks

Copy the whole error, paste it back, and type: “This happened. Fix it.” If it loops, say “Explain what went wrong in plain English, then try a different approach.”

The failure that matters is quieter: the page looks finished but something is wrong. Check every price, hour and phone number against what you typed, and click the button to see that it does what you asked.

Stay safe

Work in a fresh folder, not the one with your tax files. Read what Claude plans to change before you approve it. Keep passwords and customer data out of the project; what not to tell ChatGPT or Claude has the list.

People also ask

Do I need to know how to code to use Claude Code?

No. You type what you want in plain English and Claude writes the files. The skill that matters is describing the finish line clearly, such as what the page should show and what should happen when someone clicks. When something errors, paste the message back and ask Claude to fix it.

How much does Claude Code cost?

It is included in paid Claude plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, not the Free plan. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. Max starts at $100 a month. Prices from claude.com/pricing, checked October 31, 2026.

Is Claude Code safe to use on my computer?

It asks before it makes changes, and you choose how much it may do without asking. Point it at a new empty folder, not your documents. Read what it proposes at first, and keep passwords and customer data out of the folder.
